Photo Shoots
This image was taken with the subject sat on top of a piano, the background is quite plain so that it didn't clash to muchwith the clothing. The clothes I chose are suited to what my target audience can get ideas for their own style from. One problem with this shot is the lighting, th image seems a bit dull. |
This shot has more of the piano in view, this is a good was to demonstrate what the magazine is about and what it will include. |
The clothing I chose for these shots is something that reflects the style of music that will be in the magazine, it is a mix of different styles. I did this so that there is something for everyone. |
I changed the outfit and added props so that I got varied results. |
Once I had taken a photo I could change the look of it by editing it. In this one I changed it to black and white. This gives it an older look. |
Changing the postition of the subject gives a different perspective for the reader to look at, this makes the imagery in a magazine more interesting. |
In this image I took a close up shot of just the face. |
I liked this image a lot. therefore I wanted to see what it would look like in black and white. |
In this photo I placed a green gel filter over the red head lamp whic created a green shadow behind the subject. I like this effect because it makes the image more interesting to look at. |
This image uses the rule of thirds, I like this effect because it creates something different to a lot of other shots where the person in the shot is in the centre. |
In this image I have added a prop which not only makes the photo more interesting, it also reflects what the magazine is about. |
This is a medium close up shot which contains just the head and shoulders. The neck of a guitar is visable which reflects the artist in the shot. |
This is a similar shot, however it is in black and white and the subjects head is turned to the side which gives a different result to the previous image, |
In this image a changed the contrast and the saturtation. This makes it look a bit like a paintion or a cartoon image. I like this effect because it is interesting to look at. |
In this shot i used a green gel filter over on lamp and a blue one over the other. This creates an interesting effect. I also changed the angle of the camera to create a different result. |
This is quite a simple shot, it is in black and white and the artist is shot head on. |

Health and safety when using photography lights
In preparation for creating my music magazine I needed to take pictures for it. To do this I had to use redhead lights. Some precautions to take when using these lights are:
- They are extremely fragile - when transporting use the bad and padding. Do not knock them, two people should carry them
- Take extreme care when handling the lights - they get very hot
- Do not cover them with anything - it's a fire hazzard
- Do not look directly into the lights - 800 Watt bulbs are very bright and could cause damage to the eyes
- Switch off when not in use to conserve energy
- Extreme care should be taken around the readhead lights as the bulbs are very fragile, break easily and are very expensive to replace
- Tape down the cables to prevent saftey hazzards

College Magazine
This is the front cover and contents page I designed for my college magazine. The first thing I had to think about when creating my magazine was the audience it would be aimed at. Which is college students aged 16-18, who are interested in college news, extracuricular activities and general college life. When researching other magazines I found that in my opinion a lot of them are too over the top because they have to much crammed into a small space. Therefor when designing my magazine I tryed to keep it simple and classic looking. I decided to do an autumn edition for my magazine so I chose colours and a feature article photograph that reflect that theme. The font I chose to use for my magazine is easy to read which means it grabs the audiences attention easily. For the headline, sub-heading and the price I used white font because they are the first things people look and so I wanted them to stand out. Then for the plugs which give people a taste of what will be in the magazine a used a golden yellow which is a less harsh colour and blends more with the theme for the magazine. I also added an autumn leaf to the cover of my magazine to reflect the theme and to make the magazine cover look more interesting.
For my contents page I also tried to keep the layout quite simple so that the readers can easily find out what the rest of the magazine will include. I really like my front cover design because it looks professional, and I like the colours I used to fit my autumn theme. If I was creating the contents page again I think I would try to make it match my front cover more so they look more like they are from the same magazine. I could do this by changing the colours I used for the background. However I did keep the same font style throughout the front cover and the contents page so that they are linked and look similar in some way. I tried to keep the amount of colours I used on the contents page to a minimum to create a more professional look. I feel that if there are to many clashing colours in one area it becomes child like and can look tacky. I might also try to include more information if I made my contents page again. On the other hand I like the layout of my contents page and the angle I used on the image.

Pop/Rock Genre
The Script are an Irish Pop/Rock band, they released there first single 'We Cry' in April 2008. The single peaked at number 15 in the UK singles chart. Their second single 'The man who can't be moved' was released in September 2008 reaching number 2 in the UK and Ireland.
The Script announced a new single and album in July 2010. 'For the first time' from the album 'Science and Faith' was released in September 2010 and entered the UK charts at #5 and moved up to #4, and has entered the Irish charts at #1. The album 'Science and Faith' entered the UK and Irish charts at #1.
The photography in this image is taken professionally. The lead singer is at the front of the shot this is because he is the most recognisable person in the band, he represents the band to the public. He is in the forefront so he looks bigger than the other members of the band, this reflects his importance in the band.

Maroon 5 are an American band that also come
under the Rock/Pop genre. Their debut album
'Songs about Jane' which was extremely successful
going gold, platinum and triple platinum in many
countries around the world. Maroon 5's latest album
'Hands all Over' has just been released. The single
'Misery' from the latest album has just entered the
UK charts at #30.
The photography in this image is quite simple, the
background is plain which makes the members of the
band stand out, this is done because they are the most
important part of the shot.

Digital Photography
This image is an example of framing, i have framed this photo so that the eye is let to the main part of the picture which is the priory. |
In the photograph i used light to create the best result. I positioned the camera pointing up at the post box to make the most of the natural light. The light creates a flared effect. |
This photograph is an example of a close up shot. By using a close up shot I have framed only one part of the car to fill the frame. |
This image is a good example of perspective in photography. The arch creates a tunnel effect and it looks as there are two pictures. |

Comparing Katy Perry and Paloma Faith
Paloma Faith and Katy Perry are both very popular artists that have become successful in the past five years. Paloma Faith's music genre is pop/soul with an influence of jazz which is demonstrated by her sophisticated but fun image. On the other hand Katy Perry's music genre is pop/rock wich comes through in her fun but edgy fasion sense.
Although their music genre's are different their image can be very similar at times, for example both their image's are influenced heavily by fasion from the fifties. They both have eccentric fasion sense and often have fruit inspired outfits.

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, more commonly know by her stage name Katy Perry was born in Santa Barbara, California. She was brought up listening to gospel music whic played a big part in the start of her career in 2001 when she released a self titled gospel album as Katy Hudson which failed with the closing of her record label later that year. In 2007 she signed to her fourth record label in seven years and adopted the stage name Katy Perry. She released her first internet single 'Ur So Gay' which got attention but didn't chart. When Perry released her first mainstream album 'One of the Boys' in 2008 she adopted a 50's pin up style, using bright colours and vintage fasion.
Katy Perry is known for her bold and unconventional style choices. She gained lots of attention at the 2008 VMA's when she wore banana themed playsuit. Her dress sense is ofter humerous and she frequently wears fruit themed costumes which have inluded: cherries, banana's and watermelons. She defines her fasion sense as 'a bit of a concoction of different things. At the MTV Europe awards Katy bagged even more attention when she had 10 outfit changes throughout the show. These outfits included; an american football kit where she stood on top of a cherry chapstick; a blue owl dress; a carousel dress and many more. Katy never fails to give her audience something new and with the release of her 'Teenage Dream' album this year which reached #1 in the 'Billboard Hot 100' and is based on candy i'm sure there will be a lot more outrageous outfits on the way.

I am going analyse the front cover of a 2008 edition of NME music magazine. The largest part of the front cover is the picture of The Wombats and the second largest is the name of the band, this demonstrates that the most important thing for the magazine is the advertisement of the band. The three main colours of this front cover are red, yellow and black. Yellow and red are both very bright colours which will grab the audiences attention and get them to look at the magazine. The black font contrasts against the yellow background which leads people to read the information causing them to want to buy the magazine. This magazine cover had many sub-headers such as 'Why Britain's gone silly for the lords of the indie dancefloor' to attract the interest of the consumers. I think the target audience for this magazine would be males or females aged 15-25.
